Ted Cruz

Rafael Edward Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 in Calgary, Canada. His father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz was born in Cuba, while his mother, Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson was born in the United States. Cruz is of Italian, Irish and Cuban decent. In 1974 his family left Cuba and moved to Texas. He attended two different private high schools one of which he graduated from in 1988 as valedictorian. He went on to attend Princeton University where he graduated cum laude in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy. Furthering his education, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1995, graduating magna cum laude.
After completing his education, Cruz worked in the fields of both politics and law. One of his first major recognitions, he played a part in preparing lawyer Chuck Cooper’s testimony in favor of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. Cooper then went on to say that “[Cruz] had the obvious tools to succeed at the highest levels of politics.” In 1999 Cruz then worked as a domestic-policy advisor on the presidential campaign for George W. Bush. It was on this campaign that he met his future wife, Heidi Nelson. Nelson and Cruz were married in 2001. After Bush’s campaign ended in a victory, Cruz continued his work in the political and judicial world. He went on to argue cases in front of the Supreme Court, winning five out of nine cases. In 2011, Cruz ran for Senate and was elected in 2012. Speculation of his expected presidential candidacy started as early as 2013. He publically criticized President Barack Obama in 2014 when he accused him of, “openly desirous to destroy the Constitution and this republic.” It was on March 23, 2015 that Cruz officially announced his candidacy. He was the first major republic presidential candidate to be announced. Cruz and his wife have two daughters, Caroline and Catherine. He was an American-Canadian duel citizen before renouncing his Canadian citizenship on May 14, 2014. |
